She killed some more time playing Akkraemyth but her heart just wasn’t in it. She watched TV for a while and then went to bed early.
Angela awoke to a knock at her door. She staggered out into the living room and peered through the peephole. Harry stood in the hallway, pacing anxiously. She opened the door.
“You know how you said if there’s anything I need, I should stop by?” he said. “Well, here I am.”
“What do you need?” Angela asked.
“Uh, I’m not really qualified for that,” Angela said. “I don’t know anything about taking care of a kid.”
“Believe me, I wouldn’t be asking if I hadn’t exhausted every other option,” Harry said. “I know it’s last minute, but there’s an emergency at work and I have to go in.”
“What kind of emergency?” Angela asked.
“One of my coworkers was arrested this morning,” Harry replied. “We brought him on as treasurer a couple months ago and it turns out he’s been stealing from us the whole time. Stealing from a charity, can you believe that?”
“Yeah, I can believe it,” Angela said, and sighed. “Okay, I’ll do it.”
“Really?” he asked.
“Today’s my day off anyway,” she said. “Just give me a few minutes to clean up.”
“Thank you so much,” Harry said.
She shut the door as he turned back to his apartment. She grabbed a quick shower, threw on some fresh clothes, and tidied up her apartment a bit, putting away anything that might be inappropriate for a child’s eyes.
She stepped out into the hall and knocked on Harry’s door. He answered a minute later with Tommy at his side. Angela tried not to make eye contact with either.
“Tommy, this is Angela,” Harry said. “She’s going to be watching over you today, okay?”
