They stopped in front of the commissioner. Leigh, Angela’s best man, stepped up next to her, dressed in a black tux that contrasted her pink hair. The song finished and Jackie hopped down from the stage to stand beside Genesis. Finally, two rows of vines sprouted around them and twisted into the shape of an archway, courtesy of Anna.

“Dearly beloved,” the commissioner said. “We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of Angela Osbourne and Genesis Jacobs. When these young ladies told me they wanted a heavy metal band for the processional, I knew this would be an unorthodox ceremony. But one thing’s for sure: these two love each other as much as any couple I’ve ever joined. So it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all here this lovely afternoon. Angela and Genesis have prepared their own vows, so I’ll hand things over to them now.”

He turned the mic to face them. Angela took a deep breath, her heart pounding.

“I’m not much of a believer in fate,” she said. “But it’s amazing to think that a single fried motherboard two and a half years ago could set all of this in motion. If it’d held out a few hours longer, or if you hadn’t been working late, we never would’ve talked that night. I never would’ve contacted you about my wing situation. You never would’ve invited me to Jackie’s party. And on and on until this very moment. If any of these pieces hadn’t fallen into place, our worlds might never have collided. In the face of those odds, I can’t help but feel this was meant to be.”

Genesis smiled, fighting back tears.

“I have a confession to make,” she said. “It only took me a few minutes to fix your laptop that night. I just made it look like longer because I wanted to spend more time with you. I knew there was something special about you right from the beginning. I’ve loved my fair share of women before I met you, but none of them held a candle to you. None of them showed me the kindness and patience that you do, or gave me a kick in the ass when I really needed one. And certainly none of them defied the laws of space and time just to be with me. I don’t always feel like I deserve you, but I wouldn’t give you up for anything.”
