She set foot on the sidewalk and opened her eyes. The city seemed much emptier than it had just a few hours ago. A few signs of life flickered here and there, but for the most part, silence surrounded her.
She walked home, talking a detour down a tree-lined street along the way. When she finally stepped back into her apartment, she immediately turned on her phone and checked for messages. Nothing.
She hadn’t heard from Genesis in almost a week. Longer than before. She was starting to wonder if something was seriously wrong this time.
“Hi,” Angela texted.
A couple minutes went by, then Genesis replied, “Hey.”
“I have today off,” Angela typed. “Want to hang out?”
Another couple minutes.
“Can’t,” Genesis said. “Busy.”
“Okay,” she texted.
She put the phone away and retreated into Akkraemyth. She met up with Lilith in the city of Sal Darro and they ventured up into a section of the Daemonspine Mountains overrun with monsters. Talon quickly found herself overwhelmed, despite leveling up considerably in recent days.
“Everything okay?” Leigh asked as Lilith blasted a cave troll off a cliff. “If you need another jolt of my powers, just let me know.”
“It’s not that,” Angela typed. “My mind’s just not in the game today. I’m having trouble with a friend.”
“What kind of trouble?” Leigh said.
“Not really sure,” Angela said. “I know something’s wrong but she keeps shutting me out. I want to help her, I just… I don’t know what to do.”
“Do you know where she is right now?” Leigh asked.
“She’s probably in her apartment,” Angela replied.
“Then you do know what to do,” Leigh said.
Angela gripped her mouse and stared at Leigh’s message for a long moment.
