“I’ll take ‘Things You Don’t Want To Hear From A Girl In Your Car’ for two hundred, Alex,” Tommy said.
“Well, luckily you’re not hearing it from the girl you’re actually sleeping with,” Frederica said.
“Oh, we’re not… I mean, we haven’t… Um….” He cleared his throat. “Sorry, I don’t know why I blurted that out. I shouldn’t be talking about that stuff around you.”
“Why not?” she asked.
“Well, because we….”
He trailed off and glanced into the backseat.
“It was one time, Tommy,” she said. “I’ve had so much sex since then. Loads of sex. Sex out the wazoo.”
“That sounds painful.”
She elbowed him and chuckled.
“I’m just saying it doesn’t have to be weird anymore,” she said. “We’re both adults. We should be able to have a mature conversation about this sort of thing.”
“I suppose,” he said.
“So… what’s the holdup?” she said. “Have you two at least talked about taking things further?”
“I can’t bring myself to mention it,” he said. “She’s just so sweet and innocent. I don’t want to scare her off or, worse, make her feel pressured into something she’s not ready to do.”
“Wow, condescending much?” Frederica said. “She’s not a child. She may be small and a little wide-eyed, but she’s a grown woman and I’ve seen the way she looks at you. If you ask me, it sounds like you’re the one who’s not ready.”
Tommy crossed her arms and took a deep breath.
“I… guess I’m just afraid of screwing everything up again,” he said. “After last time….”
“Last time was my fault,” Frederica said. “Next time, you won’t have to worry about your partner being inside your head while you’re inside her—”
“Okay, okay, point taken,” Tommy said, and chuckled. “I think you’ve been spending too much time with Nila. It’s brought out your crude side.”
