“How do you and Magh do it?” Frederica typed as they fought their way through an ancient crypt infested by zombies.
“Uh, do what?” Tommy replied.
“Keep the drama away,” she said.
“Oh, haha,” he said. “Well, we still have plenty of that. But we make a point of talking about everything, even if it’s awkward or uncomfortable, so when an issue does come up, we’re able to work through it.”
“You make it sound so easy,” Frederica said.
“I wouldn’t go that far,” he said. “But I love her so she’s worth the effort.”
“Wait, you’ve already reached the ‘I love you’ stage?” Frederica asked.
“Is it really that much of a surprise?” he replied. “I mean, we’ve been dating for more than a year now.”
“True,” Frederica said. “I’ve just never been with someone that long so it didn’t really occur to me that you’d already be that serious.”
“I just didn’t want to make the same mistake I made with you,” he said. “I’ve learned my lesson about not telling people how I really feel.”
“I’m so glad our relationship could be a teaching experience for you,” she said with a stuck-out tongue emoji.
He sent her a winking face and they descended deeper into the crypt. A swarm of giant rats attacked them from all sides, making Frederica think about being inside the wall, falling.
“Fred,” Tommy said after a long silence.
“Yeah?” she replied.
“What’s going on?”
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“Come on,” he said. “I’ve known you for years. I can tell when something’s bothering you, even if I can’t always figure out what it is.”
Frederica sighed and filled Tommy in on everything that happened since last night. Josephine’s sudden arrival, Nila’s boyfriend, Sam’s surprise visit, and her own new evolution.
“Wow,” he said when she finished. “You’ve been busy.”
