“Do you want to talk about it?”
“I suppose I wouldn’t want to discuss my sex life with some random girl who barged into my dorm room, either. For the record, though, I’m a great listener, so if you change your mind, you know where to find me.”
“Thanks, I… appreciate it,” Frederica said.
She shoved her phone into her pocket and grabbed another box. This one was full of clothes.
“Well, I should probably get back to unpacking,” Nila said. “It was nice meeting you, Fred.”
“You too,” Frederica said.
Nila turned and stepped out the door. Frederica dropped the box and lay back in bed, staring up at the ceiling. An image of Tommy popped into her head. She took out her phone again and opened his message.
“All moved in yet?”
“Still unpacking,” she replied.
“Cool,” came the next message. “Let me know if you want to grab a bite to eat or something. I’m not doing much today.”
She wanted to say yes. But she wasn’t sure she was ready for that. Not after what happened last time.
“I’m pretty busy here but I’ll let you know,” she texted.
“Okay,” he replied. “Talk to you later.”
I am such a dick, she thought as she set the phone aside.
She occupied herself with unpacking so she could at least pretend she wasn’t lying. But after a while, the four white walls of her dorm room started to feel suffocating.
She got out of bed and paced around a little. She glanced at her computer. She could play a bit of Akkraemyth, her favorite online game, but she might run into Tommy on there. So instead she threw on a pair of shoes and marched out the door.
The hallway was abuzz with students coming and going. Nila’s door was closed, but the music was still blasting on the other side. Frederica’s stomach growled. She sighed and raised her hand to knock.
